Closing Concert: Louis XIV’s Orchestra!
Barokkfest 2021 ends with a celebration of the orchestral music by Lully, often referred to as the father of the modern orchestra. When Louis XIV built Versailles as Europe’s most spectacular chateau, music was on par with its lavish surroundings. The Italian-born composer Lully gathered the talents and instrumental forces among Louis XIV’s musicians and developed what was probably the foremost orchestra of his time. The orchestral «suite» form consisting of various dance movements, became a dominant musical form. This is what Bach later used in his famous orchestral suites.
